North Vancouver Museum presents Natives and Newcomers: North Van. over time

Off we went to see how indigenous people and later immigrants lived in what became North Van.  The museum has such wonderful displays of different aspects of life here. For the Squamish and Tsleil Waututh people, the forest and ocean provided food, clothing, shelter, and more.
Fishing net made out of cedar bark.

Our ocean provides an abundance of shellfish and fish.

Cedar is so aromatic.

Canoes were carved out of local trees.  Bailers scooped water out during trips.

Europeans saw the value of the massive cedar and fir trees in North Van. and moved here to profit from logging.
Logging takes major muscle.
More to come!

Jack's crystal magic

Jack brought in the materials and led the class through an experiment where we grew crystals from pennies, salt an vinegar. Recipe follows:

They were so beautiful!!

Salmon Girl

Last Friday, we went to the Presentation House Theatre to see a play called Salmon Girl.  It was about an indigenous girl who turns into a salmon while she is fishing. Through the story, we learned about salmons' life cycle, the plastic pollution patch in the ocean, and the significant role salmon play in aboriginal culture.
Light conditions weren't that good for photos, but hopefully you can see how much fun were having.

Dallas from the Squamish Nation came to our class today to bless the fish tank

We collected cedar branches, and Dallas told us the story if hiw the Salmon people came to be..

He used his beautiful deerskin drum with the eagle painting to sing us a welcoming, a blessing and a farewell song.

We dipped our cedar branches in water, put powerful nurturing thoughts into our minds and used the branches to bless all corners of the salmon tank.

It was such a special afternoon!
