North Van Museum and Archives

In Grade 3, much of Social Studies is about where we live, locally, provincially, and nationally. We also examine the evolution of our community. Hence our visit to our local museum and archives to learn about North Van at the beginning of the 20th century.
Girls and boys lined up by gender.

Logging was a significant part of North Van's economic and social development.

Most household tasks were done by hand, including the laundry. How much time would that take?!
Get that stove going in the morning. Is the wood for it chopped and ready?  You'll need it for cooking and heating your home.

Many of the services that evolved as North Van grew required horses or humans for some of the work: fire fighters hauled the hose reel themselves while wearing heavy leather hats and coats. Milk and mail delivery was by horse cart.

And then of course there was school. Seats fixed to the floor, slates and chalkboards for writing, inkwells for dipping your pens, and the strap or ruler on your palm for misbehavior.  I prefer school nowadays, don't you?

A HUGE thank you to Laura, Silvija, Sandra, Erin, and Terrie for driving us there and back and accompanying us through the museum.

NV Museum and Archives is located in the same building as the Presentation House Theatre at West 4th and Chesterfield. It's a great family field trip.
