Ms. Schnetzler's birthday

Someone special is having her birthday on Dec. 16th.  We gave her an early present, a book written by us called Ms. Schnetzler Says.  Ask your child for some of her quotations.
Here she is, opening her book.
Then, of course, CROWD SURFING!

We love you, Ms. Schnetzler. Happy birthday!

Chief Dan George at the North Van. Museum and Archives

Yesterday we went on our first field trip, and it was excellent.  The NVMA exhibit about Chief Dan George is really really good.  He is a local legend, activist, and actor who came from the Tsleil- Waututh and Squamish Nations.  The depth of the children's questions and answers, their engagement, and their focus, were really impressive.  I was one proud teacher.
Examining Chief Dan George's Drum, worn and torn with use and age.

We wore archivist gloves to handle artifacts.

What is this?  What I was it for?  What is it made of?  How do you know?

Local indigenous people used baskets woven from cedar bark to collect food.

Reading picture clues.

Every Canadian needs to read Chief Dan George's "Lament for Confederation".  He read it at Canada's Centennial celebrations in 1967.
