Thursday's Garden Visit

We almost beat the rain when we did our monthly garden visit. We raked leaves for compost and carried them to the big, huge, smelly, compost piles!

I bet you wish your kids would work so hard in your yard!

And then we learned about plant parts:

Lucky us, to have the garden right next door.

Jakob's siphon

Have you ever had to use a siphon? Jakob had the water flowing through the hose in no time!

We were impressed with his reading too!

Sucking up the water.

Got it flowing!

And a proud moment:

Hilling potatoes

On Thursday, not only did we visit the garden but we hilled potatoes. As the plants grow, the potatoes form on their stems, and we have to keep covering up the stems with dirt to maximize the number of potatoes. We hope they will be ready to harvest before school is out.

Look at those healthy leaves!

Rudy's Static Electricity Experiment

Rudy rubbed balloons that were suspended from a pole with paper and produced static electricity. He was able to move the balloons towards the paper, away from the paper and have them move away from each othe.

You were electric on stage, Rudy!,,

Seymour Hatchery

What a great classroom we had for the day. Inside and out!

Is this pool deep enough to support fry?
Or
Will my hip waders fill up?

Stream survey required measuring and observing the conditions in the stream. Emily recorded the facts.

Then we fed the steelhead trout smolt in the big holding ponds

And finally a group shot!

It's coming along

Aly and Kiran measured Ms Munro's hair last Friday, and it is definitely growing. The longest pieces are about 17 cm now.

Stories of identity

We have been working on a stories of identity project in class, where students are learning that everyone and everything has a unique story. This week we talked about how experiences that have happened in our life, (both positive and negative) shape who we are. Students drew chalk lines outside representing their their life. They then shared with a partner by walking their chalk lines and telling their unique story.

Scientist of the week!

Ben wowed the crowed with his engaging presentation skills! He taught us a about structure. He showed us how A piece of paper layed out flat between two cans will not hold up a can in the middle. But when you fold the piece of paper like  a fan, or an accordion, strength and stability hold the can in place.

Sharing

Mya and Aly brought in their fairy water for sharing. Fairy water has been a very popular item for sharing lately, as many of our students keep loosing their teeth!

Caitlin's sharing

Caitlin brought in a puffer fish skeleton for sharing. It was very spiky and delicate but Caitlyn let everyone have a chance to gently touch it. Thanks for sharing Caitlyn !

Constellation legends

In our science unit we learned about some different constellations like Ursa Major, Leo the lion and Orion. Students read a story on how their constellation came to be, acted it out, and then made up their own constellation moral and legend. The skits were very well done and the student had lots of fun performing!

Clay Coil Pots are Glazed

We appreciate the support of parent drivers yet again for making our two part clay workshop at Artists for Kids a resounding success!

Here are the fired pots with just two tiny missing parts. No explosions!

Ves was such a calm knowledgeable presence!

Great concentration!
